Chapter 4: Skip Tracing & Locating
The subject who doesn't want to be found has already made your job harder. Your job is to make it irrelevant.
Skip tracing is not a dark art. It is a disciplined, methodical process of gathering, cross-referencing, and verifying information until a clear picture of a subject's current location emerges. The process server who approaches it systematically will outperform the one who relies on instinct every time.
Start with what you know. Every assignment comes with a last known address, a name, and usually a date of birth. That is your baseline. From there, your job is to build outward — verifying what's current, identifying what's changed, and following the thread of a person's life through the public record.
Public records are your first stop and often your best. Voter registration, property records, court filings, and DMV data (where accessible) paint a remarkably detailed picture of where someone lives, works, and spends their time. Most subjects haven't disappeared — they've simply moved, and the record of that move is waiting to be found.
